As it happened, it was Amber who had news for us all at our next scheduled meeting about the pet show.
âIâve been talking to Kelly, one of the nurses at the vetâs,â she said. âYou know Iâve had to take Benji a few times about his skin recently.â Poor Benji had developed horribly itchy skin, which the vet had diagnosed as an allergy, and was trying to determine the cause. âSheâs really excited about the pet show â sheâs going to enter her own two rabbits â and sheâs got Mr Brentâs agreement to put posters up in the surgery.â
âThatâs greatâ Simon smiled enthusiastically.
âAnd also she says she can ask him if heâll be one of the judges if we like.â
Mr Brent was the senior vet at the practice. To have him on board, especially as a judge, would be really helpful. We were all enthusiastic, and went on to discuss who else we could ask to be judges.
âIdeally we need three,â Sara pointed out. âSo that there can be a majority verdict, if thereâs any disagreement about the best in any class.â
âAnd they need to be unbiased,â I added. âSomeone who knows about pets, but isnât entering one.â
âWhat about the lady who runs the boarding kennels?â Craig suggested. âSheâs looked after Judy sometimes when Iâve gone away. Iâll give her a call and ask her, if you like.â
âGood idea,â Sara approved. âAnd, to be honest, thereâs no reason why one of us canât be a judge. We canât enter our own pets â it would be seen as unfair.â
âThatâs a shame,â I said. âI suppose youâre right, but Mia was hoping to enter Smartie in the best childrenâs pet class.â
âOh, thatâs fine, surely?â Simon said, and the others nodded agreement. âThis isnât exactly Crufts. I donât think anyoneâs going to take it too seriously.â
âActually,â Sara said, âI hope they will. It needs to be taken seriously, if weâre going to have any chance of changing the councilâs mind about the park. So we all need to pray for nice weather, a good turnout, and lots of interest and enthusiasm from the press, the people of Furzewell â and the wider Devon population. This is our chance to show them what we can do. We canât afford to treat it as if itâs just a bit of fun.â She looked around at us, her face deadly serious. âThis is war, guys. And the pet show is only going to be the first battle.â
